The town is found in Nakukuru County along Nairobi Nakuru Highway, about 75km towards North West of Nairobi and about 64km from Nakuru town. It lies at an altitude of about 2084m above the sea level. Naivasha is named after Maasai name “Nai’posha” that means “rough water” referring to the sfternoon storm which visited the lake and thus, Naivasha is a colonial mispronunciation of the name Nai’posha. The whites had settled in this land. The main activity is an agricultural-base industry especially floriculture.
The town can be reached by air or road. The main airport that is near the town is Nakuru airport that is located about 65km from the town. There used to be an airstrip at Karagite 10years back but stopped operating. There is a plan of restoring the airstrip and this will increase the exportation of the flower as well attract more tourists that will lead to development of the town as well as economy of the country.
The town is well-known as a tourist destination because of the nearby attractions such as Longonot national park, Hell’s gate National park, Mount Longonot and Lake Naivasha. Tourist go these places to see different king of animals and birds such as weaver birds, flamingos, types of antelopes, hippopotamus and primates.
The town is occupied by individuals from different tribes in Kenya as well as foreigner. The population has been continuing to increase due to the neighboring tourist’s sites.
